Growing up, I played a variety of sports. Football, basketball, and baseball. My true love was baseball. In middle school, I switched basketball to wrestling. Once I got to high school, I dropped football to focus on wrestling and baseball. I was decent at both, and played baseball for a semester in college. And, I got married, started a family, and participating in athletics went out the window. So instead of playing sports, I started selling shoes and athletic equipment for a living, and really enjoyed it. I continued in that line of work while working on my master's degree, carrying a few other jobs while going to school and taking care of a growing family, including coaching high school baseball and football. When my son Noah was ready for sports, I jumped back into coaching. I coached him in various sports off and on (soccer, baseball, basketball), and decided to step aside when he was around 10-11 so others could take over that role. A couple of years ago, as he started to get stronger and stronger, I decided to get back into shape myself. I had worked out from time to time over the years, but typically regressed after a few months, or even a year of consistent training. I had enough. It was time for a permanent change. So I made up my mind to hit the gym. I started 3x per week, waking up at 4:30 am to get ready and be at the gym by 5 am. There were many days I didn't want to go. But I had drawn a line in the sand. I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. I lost weight/fat. Muscles I forgot existed started showing up again. And I felt great! Then, it became an addiction. I ramped up my training, adding another day, then another day. I got to the point where my son decided to pursue powerlifting full-time, and he motivated me to register for my first meet. So, in April of 2024, I competed in my first powerlifting meet and broke the state record in the bench press. Noah and I had been talking about starting a gym, but we finally drew a line in the sand and started putting our vision into action. Hence, Humble Beast Strength. Wed loves to share our passion for strength training with you and help you meet your goals along the way.
Getting older is hard. The pressures of everyday family and work life can get to you. I think most people have experienced that, especially as you age. As I entered my 40s, I could feel a slow down for sure. I was fat, tired, out of shape, and just unenthused with anything really. At 42, I had finally had enough. I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. I was exhausted all the time. Had no energy for my work or my family. Low-level depression set in constantly. It was like a constant cloud was over me. I drew a line in the sand. Enough was enough. No more excuses. It was time to get it together. I got in the gym. I got my diet dialed in. I maintained discipline in those two areas consistently. The fat started coming off. Muscles started showing up. I saw progress. I felt progress. I had more energy, even though I was waking up at 4:30 am most days. It changed my life. And I started to consider, "What do I want to do when I grow up?" My son Noah was developing into a high-level powerlifter. And we started discussing the future. We decided, "Let's help others transform their lives." Strength training changed his life. It changed my life. And it can change your life too.
My purpose for coaching is transformation. Changed lives. We wan to see people develop into their best selves. And a part of that can be achieved thru strength training. We were made to do hard things in life. Strength training helps you get strong, instills confidence, and develops discipline. Those items will serve you in every area of life, whether academics, athletics, work, or whatever adventure you may do next.
